Molecular formula shows the composition of atoms that form the compound. Molecular formula has index and symbol of its atoms. I am sure, that all of us very recognize the water. In chemistry, water has molecular formula as shown:
The information from H2O are:
- Number 2 in subscript after capital H is index for hydrogen tells the sum of hydrogen, H in water compound.
- The capital O shows the symbol of oxygen.
- No number in subscript after capital O it means that the sum of oxygen in water just one, number one isn't need to be written.
So when we see the water formula, we can say so many thing such:
- Every single water always form by two atom hydrogen and one atom oxygen
- Every single mole water has two moles hydrogen and one mole oxygen
- Every 18 grams water composed by 2 grams hydrogen and 16 grams oxygen It is relevant with index atoms in formula. Index 2 after hydrogen atom means two moles hydrogen which same with 2 grams hydrogen. Index 1 (not written) after oxygen means one mole oxygen which same with 16 grams oxygen.
So here we are the information I can share with you guys. Hope fully it is help you to understand the relation between molecular formula and formula composition. In other word, we can say that molecular formula is manifestation of Proust's Law. Every molecule always compose by its atom in fixed mass ratio.
